Oh, I remember now: HDFS has a {{DiskChecker}} class which will check a directory (a volume)
to make sure it can read and write into the directory. Need to find the frequency at which
that gets invoked.

Edit: Ick. It checks that you *can* R/W into the directory (permissions related) not that
you can actually create a file or read a file. Still looking at things.
