Christopher Tubbs commented on ACCUMULO-3089:
---------------------------------------------

That's a great feature for HDFS, but this is sort of orthogonal to that. This feature is a
proposal to utilize existing features of Accumulo in practical ways. The use case provided
is just one possible use case, to demonstrate an example of those features (and possibly API
improvement to better manipulate those features).

Another use case would be if one has an NFS volume, or a volume that is not differentiated
by type, but by support level or management-designated permission to use. For instance, maybe
a developer wants to use an older HDFS cluster which is plagued with hardware failures as
it reaches the end of its lifetime, for specific tables that don't matter.

The Accumulo multiple-volume support exists above the layer of HDFS, and independent of HDFS
features. So, while some use cases may be satisfied by HDFS improvements to support HSM within
HDFS, it does not satisfy all use cases for Accumulo users who maybe aren't using HDFS, or
are using a mixture of HDFS and other volumes, etc.

> Use case:
> User provisions multiple volumes, some with tmpfs drives, some with SSDs, some with traditional
magnetic spindle hard drives. A volume chooser could use attribute information on tables (ACCUMULO-2841)
to decide which volume to choose when creating new tablets.
