Everything about MAC is designed for running on a single local node.

To satisfy this issue, it seems like it might be better to make the hostname configurable
explicitly, rather than to try to discover it. But, perhaps it might be better to extend MAC
with a more generic cluster. I think [~elserj] was interested in doing something like that.
