I'd be happier if this method were abandoned and its users dealt with the {{InterruptedException}}
properly, especially by gracefully ending threads. I recall discussion on this across the
community in the past but haven't found a record of it yet.

 This seems like a good thing to do, it allows code that does not want to deal with the interrupt
to pass it on.  The question is, does doing this cause new bugs?
