I think it's the audit logging.  Your stack traces show the tserver blocked on log writing.

I'm looking in the logs for my run, and I'm seeing gigantic audit records in the log.

 The tserver log indicated it was running low on memory.  Neither increasing the timeout to
24 minutes nor raising the tserver's memory to 8GB resulted in different behavior.
