Interesting, I wonder if this is because JavaGC is avoided and/or the native maps are faster at sorting.  

So native map support has recently been added to MAC.   I have taken a quick look at the code, but not recently.  It seems like native maps can be used when Accumulo itself uses MAC.  However what about the case where an end user uses MAC?  Can this be supported?  It seems like supporting this would require putting jars maven repos that contain the shared libs.
