What is "the reader"?  I can guess, but I am not exactly sure what you mean.

bq.  we can remove the define tablet entries in the logs. Now that we're using tableIds, they
are short enough to use directly. 

A tablet id is composed of (tableID,endRow, prevRow).  Define tablet in the walog shortens
this entire thing.  So it seems like it would still be useful if the rows are long?
