One possible issue w/ this is the case where $ACCUMULO_HOME is owned by the root Linux user
and accumulo runs as another Linux user.  This is probably the case when installed via rpm.
  In this case it will not be able to create the vfs cache dir.  I do not think we can assume
$ACCUMULO_HOME can be modified.   

bq. I don't object to your suggestion, only to say that you don't want to fill up /tmp.

filling up system tmp dir is bad, but it seems like the only dir we can assume we can write
