If the cache dir is not configured I think we should place it in the system tmp dir.   There
is no good way to do this in Java (until Java 7).  Could do something like the following

  cacheDir = new File(org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils.getTempDirectory(), "accumulo-vfs-cache");

The nice thing about FileUtils.getTempDirectory() is that it returns something reasonable
for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

Is it safe for the multiple processes to use the same cache dir?
