    @joshelser  I have been thinking about performance w.r.t these changes.  Looking over
all of the changes, they are all in close methods which are called per block and not per key/value.
 So given that they are called less frequently, I suspect it would not cause performance problems.
 Also, in the normal case everything should be single threaded, so I am thinking we should
not see performance problems caused by threads waiting on each other in the normal case. 
 But perf testing would still be nice if someone has the time.
