Perhaps check the user you're running as (like not root)
Do we want to do PID level process checking?
In addition to existence of certain directories, we also want to check writability.

consistancy with out we resolve paths and make sure things work properly with relative paths,
absolute paths, symlinks, and any other path craziness people can think of.
